Government Continues to Purchase Properties Along HS2 Route

The UK government has recently purchased properties along HS2’s northern leg despite Rishi Sunak’s cancellation of the project during his party conference speech in Manchester last year. Since the announcement, three properties have been acquired along the Phase 2 line between Birmingham, Crewe, and Manchester, totalling £1.4 million in taxpayer expenditure, according to The Observer. There is now a push to sell off some parcels of land along the line before the upcoming general election. The cancellation of the northern leg is seen as a strategic move to prompt Labour to either revive the project or adopt the Network North scheme proposed by Sunak as an alternative.
