Trump’s historical slip: Eiffel Tower speech never happened

In a speech in Qatar, Donald Trump inaccurately stated that Adolf Hitler had delivered a speech at the Eiffel Tower. His visit to Paris in June 1940 was merely a brief photo opportunity, and he did not give any speeches. | Today’s Political Cartoon.

In a speech to U.S. troops at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, Donald Trump said that while he has appreciation for France, he believes the U.S. made a more significant contribution to winning WW2, and claimed that Hitler had given a speech at the Eiffel Tower.

“You know, I don’t want to be a wise guy, but when Hitler made his speech at the Eiffel Tower, I would say that wasn’t exactly ideal.”

Adolf Hitler never gave a speech at the Eiffel Tower. While he did briefly visit Paris in June 1940 following France’s surrender, he did so at dawn, for a rapid photo-op alongside architect Albert Speer and sculptor Arno Breker. He did not give any speech, let alone from the Eiffel Tower (the French had cut the lift cables shortly prior to the German forces’ invasion).
