PSG: Unhappy champions

Paris Saint-Germain’s historic win ignited chaos across Paris as celebrations spiralled into violence, torching cars and injuring many, revealing the bitter irony behind sporting glory and civic turmoil. | Today’s Political Cartoon.

Paris Saint-Germain’s long-awaited Champions League victory turned the French capital into a war zone on Saturday night, as ecstatic celebrations devolved into chaos.

Cars were set ablaze, streets were filled with debris, violence broke out, and emergency services were stretched thin. Overnight clashes resulted in 192 injuries and 491 arrests in Paris. Tragically, a 23-year-old man riding a scooter in central Paris lost his life when struck by a vehicle. Additionally, 22 police officers and 7 firefighters sustained injuries. A total of 264 vehicles were torched.

The surreal disconnect between sporting glory and civic collapse reveals a deeper unease plaguing the city’s relationship with identity, football culture, and public order.

PSG forward Ousmane Dembele, in a post-match interview, said: "Let's celebrate this but not tear everything up in Paris."
