Donald Trump’s ambition to strike a peace deal in Ukraine and boost his chances of a Nobel Peace Prize collapsed at the summit, with no agreement reached and Vladimir Putin leaving him visibly humiliated.
The failure to deliver a ceasefire dealt a blow to Trump’s image as the self-styled “king of deals”.
By contrast, Putin benefited simply from his seat at the table, exploiting the talks to bolster his global stature. He laughed off the summit’s outcome, subtly reinforcing his position on the world stage while conceding nothing of real substance.
