Back from spring break to 100th day of abomination
Donald Trump’s second 100 days have devastated America’s global standing — from deportations without due process to wrecking alliances, undermining education and economy, and shattering faith in U.S. democracy.
I ’m back from our spring break on a momentous day in world politics, one that I hoped to never see.
Today, April 29, marks Donald Trump’s second 100 days in office.
It’s his first 100 days of his second term and it’s the second time he’s marked this milestone.
In this second 100 days, Mr Trump has broken all that he touched — or even looked at — mostly, the idea of America as the shining city on the hill. His report card is abominable. He has failed on every metric other than to globally lower America’s standing.
Consider this:
▪ His administration has been deporting immigrants without due process;
▪ He is eliminating the Education Department;
▪ He has unleashed Elon Musk to defenestrate the federal government at every level;
▪ He has undermined America’s economic prospects by imposing crippling tariffs on the whole world, a move that is very likely to plunge the country into a recession;
▪ He has used antisemitism as an excuse to assault universities’ academic independence, thereby undercutting a jewel of the American system;
▪ And he has managed to break up America’s best and closest relationship — with Canada. It says something that one of the first utterances of As Prime Minister Mark Carney after leading his centre-left Liberal Party to victory in Canada’s April 29 general election were as follows: “We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we must never forget the lessons”.
Some of us have somewhat the same feeling, 100 days into Mr Trump’s second term.
