F rench prosecutors have opened an investigation into racist abuse aimed at Kylian Mbappé after France knocked Paraguay out of the World Cup last week, turning a football controversy into a test of public accountability for elected officials.
The case centres on Celeste Amarilla, a Paraguayan senator, who made racist remarks about the France captain after Paraguay’s 1-0 defeat in the round of 16. The abuse prompted condemnation from Mbappé, French football officials and political figures around the world.
The Paris prosecutor’s office is now investigating aggravated public insult and public provocation to hatred or violence. The French Football Federation (FFF) said it had referred the matter to prosecutors.
The dispute escalated after Amarilla continued to defend herself. During a Paraguayan Senate session, she said: “When Orlando Gill [Paraguay’s goalkeeper] extended his hand with all the humility of a Paraguayan, that son of a b**** refused to shake it and shouted in his face. That is not French. A Frenchman would never have done that.”
