G ianni Infantino’s plan to bring private capital into FIFA’s biggest competitions has become more than a fight over money. It is now a test of whether the FIFA president still controls the federation coalition that has sustained his power.

UEFA’s 55 member associations have agreed to boycott FIFA competitions if Infantino presses ahead with the proposal. The plan would create FIFA Forward Enterprise, a commercial company covering rights including broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing and licensing. Sky Sports reported that FIFA wants to raise up to $4.2bn by selling minority, non-controlling stakes in the company, which FIFA says would be valued at about $20bn.

FIFA says it would retain control over governance and sporting decisions. But UEFA’s response turns the dispute into a direct confrontation between European football and Zurich.
