Sunak defends North Sea oil and gas licences

Rishi Sunak said new licences for oil and gas in the North Sea are consistent with the government’s net zero target and reduced carbon emissions compared to importing oil and gas.

D uring a visit to Aberdeenshire, PM Rishi Sunak emphasised that approving new licences for drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea aligns with the government’s plan to achieve net zero emissions.

Sunak further highlighted the environmental benefits of domestic oil and gas, stating that it saves “two, three, four times the amount of carbon emissions” compared to importing it from distant locations.

When asked about the approval of the Rosebank oil and gas field in the North Sea, he explained that licensing decisions are made in the usual manner.
